Every Man and his Dog Competition
Fri, 16 Jul 2010
FARMERS from across the state are encouraged to bring along their sheep dogs to this year’s Dowerin GWN Machinery Field Days, to show off their talent in the first ever “Every man and his Dog” competition.
The yard dog trial will be held during the Field Days on the 25th and 26th of August, giving farmers and trainers the opportunity to put their dog to the test.
Dowerin Field Days chairman Philip Metcalf said the competition is open to all levels, whether they are experienced handlers or farmers who just wouldn’t be without his best mate.
“As a farmer I know how infuriating sheep can be,” Mr Metcalf said.
“And when I am working in the yards, on a hot summer’s day, and the sheep just won’t go in the right direction, there is no one I would rather have at my side than a good working sheep dog.
“It was with this in mind that we came up with the idea of this competition, which will allow farmers to put their dog to the test in what will be an enjoyable yard trial.”
The competition will involve a short course, in which farmers will have to instruct their dog to get the Sheep through.
Rules will prevent farmers from actually assisting the dog in pushing up the sheep, and will require a calm and sensible working dog, in order to get the most points.
“The winning farmer and his dog will be rewarded with 20kg bag of dog biscuits and a new pair of Rossi boots, thanks to Dowerin Farmshed,” Mr Metcalf said.
“And everyone else will get the taste for what dog trials are all about, and will have the opportunity to see how their dog compares against others.”
The competition will be split into three classes including the Farmer class, which is open to anyone who has not competed in an official trial, the Novice dog class which is open to any dog which has not won a recognised yard and utility trial and the Open class which is open to any person or dog.
Entries are now open and forms can be downloaded from the Dowerin Field Days website at
